Korean Shamanism
In South Korea, Buddhism and Christianity are the predominant belief systems, although many still turn to the traditions of Shamanism, with its roots in Korean folk culture.
Inwangsan village in Seoul is set on a hillside high above the city and is the location of several shrines and temple buildings. Gut ceremonies (shaman rites) are held in the Guksadang Shrine throughout the year and are performed by the female mudang (priest) who dances and chants to songs played by musicians to connect with spirits of the departed.
Shamans also perform guts for clients to provide physical, psychological and spiritual healing and although seen as a profession, the practice of shamanism is still highly stigmatised in Korean culture.
