Construction in China: The Workers

Most of China's construction workers are migrants, leaving their hometowns to work in the cities where they can earn a decent wage to send back to their families. China's 'floating' (migrant) population totals more than 130 million people, of which 20 million are believed to work in construction: a third of the entire population of the UK.

These photographs intend to describe life on-site, and to demonstrate the sense of community that is present among a workforce that is often hundreds, even thousands, of miles away from home.

For four months I photographed construction workers at sites in Dalian (north east Liaoning Province), Nanjing, and at the site of Olympic Park in Beijing.
